Deep Blue and Timeless Wood: A Journey of Co-creation with Tokushima’s Masters

Tokushima, a region where the 600-year-old tradition of "Awa Ai" (indigo) and exquisite woodworking techniques are deeply rooted. This is not a mere sightseeing tour, but a "journey of rebirth" where you converse with artisans and breathe new life into tradition with your own hands. From the mystical depth of indigo that has transcended 1300 years to the essence of woodworking that captivates luxury hotels worldwide, you will visit the private ateliers of four master artisans. These three days of sharing their philosophy will awaken your senses and allow you to co-create the future of Japanese craft.

Located on the eastern edge of Shikoku and blessed with abundant water and lush greenery, Tokushima has flourished as a center for indigo and timber since ancient times. Today, it remains a sacred ground for Japan’s finest handwork. On this journey, you will travel from the heart of Tokushima City to the serene outskirts, stepping into the "daily lives of artisans" and witnessing the profound process from the birth of raw materials to the final masterpiece.

Sample Itinerary

Your journey begins with the world of "Tsukiita"—wood sliced as thin as paper. Since 1953, Mori Kougei has provided these exquisite surfaces for world-class spaces like Aman Resorts and the Imperial Hotel. Experience the artisan's challenge of expanding the possibilities of wood through the power of design while honoring tradition. Witness the moment where the warmth of natural wood meets refined modern aesthetics.

In the morning, visit Watanabe’s, a rare atelier that handles everything from cultivating the soil to the final dyeing process. Their "Awa Ai" is created using the traditional "Sukumo" method, fermented without any chemicals. Feel the essence of "Japan Blue," a deep, living color born from the natural cycle of Tokushima, and experience the soul of the fermentation process.

In the afternoon, step into the world of "Awa Sashimono" at Tominaga Joiner, a legacy dating back to 1895. Under the guidance of a master recognized as a "Contemporary Master Craftsman," you will learn the precise technique of joining wood without a single nail. Discover the serene beauty of "Kumiko" latticework, where geometry meets spiritual discipline.

On the final day, experience a breathtaking fusion of heritage and modern materials: "Indigo Concrete." By merging Awa Indigo with architectural mortar, reteras. transforms industrial gray into elegant indigo gradients. This innovative expression has been highly acclaimed even at the Louvre. Conclude your journey by feeling the new pulse of Tokushima, where tradition is constantly being "re-imagined."
